PRIVACY
Privacy Policy
Matters has no backend that holds your tasks. Your data lives on your devices and syncs through your own iCloud — we never see it. This page spells out exactly what that means.
01 The short version
Matters doesn't ask you to create an account and has no server that stores your tasks. Everything you type — lists, tasks, decisions, notes, habits, images — stays on your device and, if you turn on iCloud, syncs privately through your own Apple ID. We don't track you, we don't run ads, and we don't sell or share your data. We literally can't read your tasks, because they never reach us.
The rest of this policy explains the details: what's stored, where it lives, the few things Apple handles on our behalf, and the rights you have over your own data.
02 Who this covers
This policy applies to the Matters apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac (the “app”) and to this website, mattersplanner.com. Matters is made by Modum Ventures, an independent developer based in Stockholm, Sweden (“we,” “us,” “Matters”). For privacy matters you can always reach a person at hello@mattersplanner.com.
03 What Matters stores, and where
Matters is an offline-first app. The content you create is written to a local database on your device. That includes:
- Your lists, plans, folders, and tasks — including rolling tasks, recurring tasks, deadlines, and decisions (with the outcomes and rationale you record).
- Habits and their history, time-block routines, focus-timer sessions, and Kanban arrangements.
- Brief pages — meetings, decisions, and your free-text working notes, questions, and risks.
- Any images you attach to a task, plus your app settings and preferences.
Matters also keeps a small trial-start timestamp in your device keychain so the 14-day free trial is remembered even if you reinstall the app. It holds no task content and no identifier, and it’s never sent to us.
We don't operate a database of our own that holds this content. There is no “Matters account,” no login on our servers, and no copy of your tasks sitting somewhere we control.
04 iCloud sync
If you're signed in to iCloud and leave sync on, Matters keeps your data consistent across your devices using Apple's CloudKit in your private iCloud database. This data is associated with your Apple ID and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy and iCloud terms — not stored or accessed by us.
Because the sync container is your own private iCloud, we have no visibility into it. You can turn sync off in iOS or macOS Settings by turning Matters off in your iCloud app list, in which case the app keeps working entirely on-device.
06 Calendar, notifications, and photos
Calendar (read-only)
If you grant calendar access, Matters reads your events through Apple's EventKit so they can be interleaved with your tasks in the agenda. This is read-only: Matters does not modify your calendars, and your events are processed on your device and are never uploaded to us.
Notifications
Reminders and time-block notifications are scheduled locally on your device. They aren't routed through a push server we operate, and setting them up doesn't send your task content anywhere.
Image attachments
When you attach an image to a task, Matters stores a compressed copy in its local database (and in your private iCloud if sync is on). We don't request access to your full photo library beyond the picture you choose to attach.
07 Purchases and subscriptions
Matters offers a free trial and a paid upgrade (an annual subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase). All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit. We never see or receive your card number, billing address, or other payment details.
To keep your purchase in sync across your devices, the app reads your entitlement and transaction status from Apple (for example, whether a subscription is active and when it renews). This tells the app to unlock — it doesn't identify you to us personally. Apple's handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
08 Tracking, and what we don't collect
Matters contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. We don't build a profile of you, we don't track you across apps or websites, and we don't sell or rent your information to anyone. There is nothing to opt out of, because there is no tracking to begin with.
The one exception is entirely in your hands: if you've turned on “Share with App Developers” in your device's privacy settings, Apple may share aggregated, anonymized diagnostics and crash reports with us. These come from Apple in summary form, never contain your task content, and can be switched off at any time in iOS or macOS Settings. Similarly, if you choose to email us a problem report, we'll only have whatever you decide to include.
09 Children's privacy
Matters is a general-audience productivity app and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children — and in practice we don't collect personal information from anyone on our own servers. If you believe a child has provided us information through a support email, contact us and we'll delete it.
10 Keeping and deleting your data
Because your data lives with you, you control how long it's kept. Delete a task, list, or habit in the app and it's gone from that device; with sync on, the deletion propagates through your iCloud. To remove everything, delete the app and clear Matters' data from iCloud in your device's iCloud settings.
Any email you send to support is kept only as long as needed to answer you and is not used for marketing.
11 Your rights
Depending on where you live, privacy laws such as the EU/UK GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) give you rights to access, correct, export, and delete your personal data, and not to be discriminated against for exercising them.
Matters is built so these rights are mostly self-service: your data is already in your hands, you can export a full backup (JSON) or a CSV from within the app at any time, and you can delete any of it yourself. We don't sell personal information, so there's nothing to opt out of on that front. If you'd like help exercising a right, or have a question about data Apple processes on our behalf, email hello@mattersplanner.com.
12 Security
Your data is protected by the security of your own devices and your Apple ID — device passcode/biometrics, FileVault or device encryption, and the protections Apple applies to iCloud and CloudKit in transit and at rest. Because we don't hold a copy of your content, there is no central Matters database to breach. We still recommend keeping your devices and OS up to date and securing your Apple ID with two-factor authentication.
13 Changes to this policy
If we change how Matters handles data, we'll update this page and revise the “last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect. Continuing to use Matters after an update means you accept the revised policy.
